In Seville, tapas are more than food – they are part of daily life. Going for tapas means meeting friends, trying different dishes, and enjoying the atmosphere.

What are tapas?
Tapas are small portions of food. Instead of ordering one big plate, you can order several tapas to share and to taste many flavours.
Famous tapas from Seville
Here are some popular choices:
  • Tortilla de patatas – Spanish omelette with potatoes.
  • Salmorejo – a cold cream of tomato, bread, and olive oil.
  • Espinacas con garbanzos – spinach with chickpeas.
  • Pescaíto frito – small fried fish, crunchy and tasty.
  • Jamón ibérico – Iberian ham, very famous.
  • Croquetas – small fried balls with béchamel and ham or chicken.
  • Patatas bravas – fried potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce.
  • Chorizo al vino – sausage cooked in wine.
  • Gambas al ajillo – prawns with garlic and olive oil.

Drinks with tapas
In Seville, people usually drink:
  • Cerveza (beer) – often served very cold in small glasses.
  • Vino (wine) – red or white.
  • Tinto de verano – red wine mixed with soda and ice, very refreshing in summer.

Note about sangría: Many tourists ask for sangría, but local people in Seville do not usually order it. In many bars, sangría is made with cheap wine or leftovers. Locals prefer tinto de verano, which is lighter and more refreshing.

How to order in a restaurant
Here are some useful phrases:
  • Quiero una tapa de tortilla, por favor. → I want a tapa of potato omelette, please.
  • ¿Nos trae la cuenta, por favor? → Can you bring us the bill, please?
  • ¿Qué nos recomienda? → What do you recommend?

Useful expression
In Seville, people often say: “¡Vamos de tapas!” → “Let’s go for tapas!”
